From hidden-gems to places to people-watch, from bookshops to beauty spots – The Five at Five offers some post-lockdown inspiration that celebrates the independents.
This week’s selection has been curated by Meg Quashie, AKA Megatronic, the DJ, culture producer and artist manager who splits her time between London and Dubai. Here, Meg fills us in on the global locations that inspire her on the daily.
Quashie began songwriting and playing guitar at 17, then started a band called Black Cherry in her mid-20’s and spent 10 years touring the world. However, in 2013, she entered into the club scene and began DJing, and moved to Dubai three years later.
Not only does Quashie travel the world for her DJ gigs, often spinning for the likes of Chanel and Gucci, but she also finds time to found and run female-led and female-focused enterprises that look to empower young women and cultivate their creativity — especially those in the Middle East region.
FOR FOOD
I'm not a big foodie, but Jones & Sons in Dalston, London has hands down been some of my best restaurant experiences over the last few years. Literally been here for so many birthdays, wedding receptions, baby showers etc... It's a great family restaurant and has been a part of some of the happiest times. Andy, the owner, has really created something timeless for the community.
FOR PEOPLE-WATCHING
Definitely my mother’s house for people-watching. She has massive windows at the front, covered by a tree... So it's super great for people-watching, as no one can see you.
FOR RECORDS
I love the setup, the vibe, the energy of the Flip Side DXB store... Sometimes I spend all day there listening to vinyl.
FOR WELLNESS
The beautiful dog beach just outside of Dubai, in Umm Al Quwain, is my favourite spot for self-care. Dogs, good food, clean blue water, and just great vibes.
FOR SHOPPING
The Lower East Side is by far my favourite place to shop. It just has the perfect blend of high street brands and little thrift stores to navigate through. As well as plenty of places to eat and drink between shops.
