The Five at Five: Love Jamii
The Five at Five is a download of the best things to read, watch, shop, and get inspiration from – ready for the weekend. Each week, we’ll be bringing you selections from different tastemakers in our community, so you can delve into what’s keeping them entertained.
This week’s curator is Khalia Ismain, founder of Love Jamii, the discount card and discovery platform, making it easy for you to find and shop at the best of independent black-owned businesses in the UK.
Read: Why I'm No Longer Talking To White People About Race - one of my favourite books ever, it effortlessly expresses experiences and feelings that I've always had about the world but have had the words for.
Watch: Sitting in Limbo – a heartbreaking documentary about how the Windrush scandal has devastated lives, and continues to affect the Caribbean community in the UK
Listen: Common Sense by J Hus – a bit of an oldie (it came out in 2017), but one of my favourite albums! It's a fun blend of British, Caribbean and African sounds - basically Jamii in music form!
Shop: Is it a cheat to say lovejamii.com? If yes, then I'm always raving about Tihara Smith - greetings cards and stationery that exude Black British culture in funky 1960s typography.
Inspiration: Treasure Tress - a monthly discovery box for kinky curly girls, they make it so easy to discover new products for afro hair and have created an incredible community for black women in the UK. Their founder Jamelia has built it all from nothing, and is an incredible inspiration for entrepreneurs everywhere.
