From hidden-gems to places to people-watch, from bookshops to beauty spots – The Five at Five offers some post-lockdown inspiration that celebrates the independents.
This week’s selection has been curated by the New York-based founder of Yew Yew Shop, Jenny Wichman, who highlights her favourite spots that inspire and intrigue.
“I always knew I wanted to start my own business, but didn’t know what product I wanted to make or where to start,” explains Jenny, who launched Yew Yew Shop back in 2017. “After months of soul searching and endless inspirational quote reading... I came to the realization that the one thing I’m really passionate about is smoking weed.”
After taking a long hard look at her stash bag, Jenny realized it was composed of a ziplock baggie, bobby pin and an alien shaped glass pipe. “The entire thing was so sketchy looking that I always kept it hidden away and felt kind of ashamed of it.”
Enter Yew Yew, the undeniably chic cannabis accessory brand that produces the most beautifully designed pipes among other things, and that’s also focused on breaking the stigma around the plant.
FOR FOOD
“When in NYC, I love to go to Lovely Day. It's a Thai spot that has great vibes, drinks, and food.”
FOR PEOPLE-WATCHING
“People watching is great at any outdoor cafe in Paris. I visited a few years ago and will never forget sipping an aperol spritz and simply watching people pass by.”
FOR BOOKS
“Head Hi in Brooklyn is the best. It happens to be run by some of my favorite humans too.”
FOR WELLNESS
“My favorite spot to clear my mind is Fort Tilden in New York. I have taken so many long bike rides out there, then spent the whole day on the nude-ish beach. It's a great vibe and so relaxing.”
FOR SHOPPING
“When it comes to shopping, I love any city with good vintage and thrift stores.”
